I have no depth of field here, so only the scratch is in focus. I tried my new favorite polish on it: Meguiar's Swirl Remover on a Dremel. Didn't work; the scratch was too deep.I have finally put a decent scratch on the hesalite of my Omega Speedmaster. In this tutorial, I will cover everything you need to remove scratches and resto.
As you can see, there were a lot of scratches and scuffs, some of them which were really quite deep. To polish, I first masked off the bezel and then gave the crystal a good wet sanding with 1000 grit sandpaper. Yep - scratches pretty easily, but buffs out most times and it’s really not very expensive to replace a hesalite crystal on a modern Speedy - almost an order of magnitude less than the cost of replacing a sapphire crystal.
Hesalite Dat warmth, dat dome, dat dial clarity, how the dial comes in as you roll your wrist to tell the time, and dat Omega logo. I've had scratches on the crystal from time to time. Within in 45 seconds of starting to rub it onto the scratched area with a cotton ball the scratch started to fade. Within two minutes it was totally gone. I just wanted to record the fact that polyWatch is fantastic for getting scratches out .
I purchased my first Omega about a year ago and decided to go with the Speedmaster Moonwatch w/Hesalite to stay truest to the original. Now I have some scuffs/scratches I want to get rid of. I read that Polywatch is the most common way of doing it. Anyone else have any other suggestions?
I have read the hesalite scratches very easily, but also buffs out easily. Being one to keep my watches pretty much mint, this could be a problem. Being OCD though, sometimes just changing your mindset about something can make a world of difference. As mentioned, being a form of plastic, hesalite is not scratch-resistant. Over time, it will get scratches when worn. Deep scratches require some more pressure, but lighter scratches will appear regardless. Hesalite scratches very easily whereas sapphire is hard so it won't scratch but more likely to shatter. Hesalite is what they used to go the moon. Means nothing to me.
